We have two terms to explain our social behavior – etiquette and manners. The word etiquette comes from the French language which means the rules of proper conduct in society.
Manners are behaviors that are considered polite in a particular society or culture. Manner can be either good or bad. For instance, it is a bad manner to speak with food in someone’s mouth. No one likes a person with bad manners.
One thing to keep in mind is that etiquette and manners vary from society to society and from culture to culture.
As children, we have been taught to show hospitality and respect to our guests and elders. You must be polite when you work in an office, especially when your boss or superior speaks, you must keep silent.
Sometimes it can be annoying to follow such rules. At times, your mind may become hostile to such discipline. Now, of course, you realize that you can’t always behave the way you like, especially when someone else is present.
We live in a society and the impact of our behavior falls on others. With that in mind, we have to treat others, whether he is my family member or someone outside.
We learn etiquette and manners from our parents, families, and various institutions such as schools, colleges, and various professional organizations. There are different rules of conduct for every social event.
Everyone knows how important it is to say ‘please‘ and ‘thank you‘ in everyday life. A few more polite expressions like ‘excuse me‘, ‘pardon me‘, ‘may I‘, will make your daily life smoother and more enjoyable.
